Scarlet gilia is a striking biennial to short-lived perennial with a tall, slender spike of trumpet-shaped, brilliant scarlet-red flowers that light up dry, open sites in summer. It’s a classic hummingbird plant – the long tubular blooms are custom-built for hummingbird pollination – and it also draws in hawkmoths at dusk. Easy to grow from seed in a sunny, well-drained spot, it’s a striking vertical accent for a dry pollinator garden and one of the best plants you can grow to reliably attract hummingbirds.
