MacCall’s aster is a naturally occurring hybrid between fringed aster and smooth aster, combining smooth, blue-green stems and leaves with sprays of soft blue-purple, daisy-like flowers in late summer and fall. Found in moist meadows and open forest edges through the BC interior, it typically grows 40-80 cm tall. Like other native asters, it’s an important late-season nectar source for bees and butterflies, and it pairs beautifully with goldenrod for a classic fall pollinator display.
