Brown-eyed Susan (common gaillardia, blanketflower) is a native wildflower recognized for its large yellow petals and reddish-purple centre – the brown ‘eye’ that gives it the name.  In the wild, it can be found gracing open meadows and sunny hillsides in the southern Interior of British Columbia.  This hardy, easy to grow, perennial is perfect for adding bursts of vibrant color to native gardens.  Its seeds resemble tiny badminton shuttlecocks and can be planted in the spring or fall.

There are many horticultural cultivars of brown-eyed Susan that are sometimes labeled as ‘native’.  All our seeds and plants are regionally sourced to preserve local genetic diversity and local plant-pollinator relationships.

Note: Common names can be confusing!  Many people call Rudbeckia hirta ‘Brown-eyed Susan’ or ‘Black-eyed Susan’, a plant that is not native to British Columbia.  Widely sold in stores as a ‘native plant’, we encourage you to choose your plants wisely and favour local native species.
