Spreading dogbane is a native perennial with clusters of small, fragrant, pale pink bell-shaped flowers that dangle from reddish stems through summer. It spreads by rhizome to form loose patches in dry to moist open sites, and its flowers – despite their small size – are an exceptional pollinator draw, particularly for butterflies. Note: the milky sap is toxic if ingested, so it’s best kept away from areas with grazing livestock or curious pets. A valuable, low-maintenance addition to a pollinator garden where it has room to spread.
